Brazil INFORMATION

Geography

The fifth largest country in the world and the largest country in South America, Brazil has 7400 km of Atlantic coastline and contains the majority of the Amazon Basin. Places of interest include Foz, Salvador, Ilha Grande and Sao Paulo. Brazil encompasses a wide range of tropical and sub-tropical landscapes, the world's largest river system and the greatest expanse of virgin rainforest. The country has been grouped into large geo-units- the tropical North contains 40% of territory and is mainly Amazon forest. This area accounts for a small amount of population and economic output. The Southeast covers 10% of area but conversely accounts for the majority of production and population. Rio de Janeiro remains Brazil's main cultural and tourist centre. Culture

The modern Brazilian life has been formed by the cultures of the indigenous Indians, Africans and Portuguese. The Portuguese dominate this influence and Brazil takes its’ language and religion (Roman Catholic) from Portugal. Whereas Portuguese and African tradition, food, dance and religion dominate the cities and coast there is still a strong and ancient custom amongst the Amazonian Indians. Sao Paulo and Rio are homes to many respected museums, universities, libraries and eateries.

Society

Brazil is a federal republic enjoying universal suffrage. Its’ capital is Brasilia. Although the government can intervene in state and local affairs Brazil is one of the best performing states on human rights. A fantastically diverse country, as good as it is bad when the polarity of income and the associated problems are taken into account

Economy

A history of booms and busts has characterized Brazil’s economic history but recent diversification has led to remarkable growth, a large world stage, inflation and underemployment.

Health, Safety and Crime

Petty crime is to be expected as it is in the UK. This can be a problem if students/tourists don’t think defensively – Stay in groups, keep passports in a communal safe, be cautious after dark- whether in urban or country environments, and stay with or take advice from local guides- they know the place better than anyone.
