BRAZIL - ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The Brazil programme includes visits to the following areas

Salvador – Set on the beautiful bay of Todos os Santos, Salvador was the first settlement of the Portuguese in 1549. It is a large modern city but it still retains many of the colonial public buildings, ornate squares and churches, many of which are magnificent. Salvador was Brazil’s main slave port and as a result much of its population is black, unlike the rest of the country. African influences are everywhere, particularly in the food and religion. Salvador is a centre for music, art and literature and enjoys a carnival to rival Rio’s.

Ilha Grande – A large island of mountainous jungle, historic ruins and beautiful beaches, this state park maintains a ban on motor vehicles and new building. Wildlife here is stunning  with parrots, hummingbirds, butterflies and monkeys ( as well as ferocious insects!) found in large numbers.

Sao Paulo – Situated on the shores of  the Rio Tiete, Sao Paulo was originally a Christian missionary set up in 1554. It grew due to its’ cool climate and perfect coffee growing conditions and became the transport hub of the country. The population grew and now stands at 10 million. Although large and industrial there are still some grand public buildings and Sao Paulo is home to a lively music and arts world.

Rio de Janeiro – Without doubt one of the world’s greatest cities, Rio grew when gold was discovered in the neighbouring state of Minas Gerais in the 1690’s. Rio is greatly influenced by African culture. Rebuilding of the city at the turn of the century was based on the plans and architecture of Paris, so little of the colonial town remains. Rio’s fame came from its’ beaches to the cities south. Rio’ favelas on the surrounding hillsides are in stark contrast to the wealth and beauty of the capital.
