Nairobi – This is one of Africa’s major cities, both commercially and politically, and has a population of 3 million. Nairobi is only a century old and appears very Western, although this is only superficial, the city enjoys a vibrant club and band scene and is home to the National Museum. There is an eclectic mix of people and this fuels a tolerance and a friendly buzz. That said new arrivals should be aware of robberies and bag snatching.

Kakamega Forest – A tract of equatorial jungle (230 km squared) that has been cut off from the Guineo-Congolan rainforest due to human cultivation, this isolated environment is famous among zoologists and botanists. It contains 300 species of birds, 7 species of primates and many reptiles. Many species are found nowhere else in East Africa and are remnants from when the forest was part of continent wide system. The long term future of this forest is not looking bright as there is local pressure on plant and animal species- leopards became extinct here 10 years ago.
