TWIN

The Story so far...

TWIN was set up at Chester in 1987 in order to 'tap the Christian and humanitarian sympathies within the community' to:

  • raise financial support for projects to 'raise the quality of life' in 2/3 World communities where some link with the college exists
  • raise awareness of development and related issues
  • encourage links overseas.

TWIN has received most of its funds by the regular giving of supporters - the TWIN 'members', as well as various fund-raising events, which has enabled it to make grants of, on average, some £3000 each year. Particular links have existed in the past, for example, with the village of Jema in Ghana.

TWIN has existed through the committed work of a few staff and students, and the generosity of its supporters. In September 1999, it was agreed that the Global Perspective Project should be asked to take on TWIN's management. GP can provide expertise, an appropriate framework for the disbursement of funds, and a commitment to keeping members informed.

TWIN funds have traditionally been focused on direct support for projects overseas by partner organisations. In future, TWIN funds will be held separately from other GP funds and used in the same way, within the broader framework of GP's involvement in work to change attitudes, build commitment and promote participation and action for change.

The projects and organisations supported by TWIN money are each carefully selected. Attention is paid to the objectives and the working methodology of the organisation and its projects. Grass roots organisations working with participatory methodologies are preferred. Another important element is what prospects there exist for a long term partnership. Final formal approval of grants is given by by the Foundation Committee of the College.
