GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE

AS PART OF WORK BASED LEARNING

As one of the options available for the work-based learning double module, Year 2 students of Chester College have the opportunity to do their placement in countries such as Kenya and Uganda, Brazil and Costa Rica. Global Perspective provides challenging placements in co-ordination with our partner organisations.

Taking part in GP asks far more of you than simply doing one more part of your course: participants will need to throw themselves wholeheartedly into an experience which has been built out of the enthusiasm and voluntary contributions of numerous people, both in Chester and overseas.

The emphasis is very much on learning from the communities, and that takes place through visiting and being involved with various projects, such as:

  • Special needs education
  • International development
  • Environmental management
  • Community health work
  • Agricultural - rural development
  • Using drama for development
  • Capacity-building

Placements take around 6 weeks. For those going to Costa Rica and Brazil language tuition will be given prior to departure. Several orientation and preparation sessions are part of the overall programme. The assessment is: a reflective essay, reflective interview and development essay.

Costs for the year 2004 are £1600:for all three expeditions. Prices include: flights, orientation and preparation, board and lodging, insurance, meals, language tuition.

GP aims to keep the cost as low as possible, but the prices reflect the considerable care and preparation which goes into making the visits successful, and highly respectful towards the sensitivities of local partners and towards the crucial issues which you will be looking at.
